How to Make a Rabbit Hand Shadow Puppet (One Hand)

Reviewed by Shadow Pals editorial team on Aug 9, 2026.

Hand Position Reference

Make a rabbit hand shadow puppet with one hand by forming a round head loop and two long ears. The rabbit is a strong first figure because the ears remain recognizable even while you are still learning the finger positions.

Setup

Aim one bright light at a blank wall, dim the room, and hold your hand about halfway between the light and wall. Start with the radial side view shown above so the head loop does not disappear behind the fingers.

Rabbit Hand Shadow Puppet Instructions

  1. Start with a flat hand: Hold the hand open and flat toward the light.
  2. Make the head loop: Touch the thumb to the index finger without pinching too hard.
  3. Raise the ears: Keep the middle and ring fingers up and fairly straight so the ears stay pointy.
  4. Tuck the nose: Drop the little finger toward the palm so it does not become a third ear.
  5. Twitch the ears: Wiggle one raised finger at a time once the silhouette is stable. Keep the thumb-index loop still.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • A third ear appears: Tuck the pinky farther toward the palm.
  • The head has a bright gap: Bring the thumb and index finger into a gentle contact without squeezing.
  • The ears merge together: Separate the middle and ring fingers slightly at the tips.
  • The outline is soft: Move the hand closer to the wall.

Movement and Left-Hand Practice

Use a small ear twitch or a slow head turn. Large movements break the head loop. For the left hand, select the mirrored reference above and keep the same finger jobs.

App Practice Focus

The Shadow Pals app treats rabbit as a beginner finger-isolation figure. It opens on the radial camera angle because the side view makes the thumb-index loop and the two ears easiest to compare.
