How to Make a Two-Handed Barking Dog Shadow Puppet

Requires two handsdog

Reviewed by Shadow Pals editorial team on Aug 9, 2026.

Use two hands when you want a larger barking dog shadow puppet with two pointed ears and a wider moving mouth. Build the head first, hold it steady, and then move only the lower-jaw fingers.

Setup

Aim one bright light at a blank wall or white sheet and dim the other lights. Hold both hands at the same distance from the wall so one side of the dog's face does not look larger than the other.

Two-Handed Barking Dog Instructions

  1. Face the palms together: Hold both hands in front of the light with the palms turned toward each other and the wrists level.
  2. Join the head: Bring the inner edges of the hands close enough that the center of the face reads as one shape.
  3. Form the ears: Lift both thumbs and angle them outward slightly. Keep the two ear points balanced.
  4. Shape the eyes: Fold the index fingers inward by the same amount on both hands. Small matching bends keep the face symmetrical.
  5. Build the muzzle: Hold the middle and ring fingers close together so the snout stays solid.
  6. Animate the mouth: Move the pinkies down together to open the lower jaw, then close them back against the ring fingers.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • A bright line splits the face: Bring the hands slightly closer together without overlapping them.
  • One ear is taller: Level the wrists first, then match the two thumb angles.
  • The bark shakes the whole head: Move only the pinkies and keep the middle fingers still.
  • The silhouette is too large: Move both hands closer to the wall while keeping them at the same depth.

One Hand or Two Hands?

This version makes a broad, animated face and works well when barking is the main action. The one-hand dog shadow puppet is faster to form, leaves the other hand free, and can also become a wolf or fox with small angle changes.

When the shape feels good, mark it practiced and keep your place.
